Walking With the Wounded

Walking With the Wounded is a UK charity which aims to support veterans with physical, mental or social injuries on their journey to long term security, independence and employment.

At Shard Capital we feel a strong affiliation with them, especially as a number of our team, including our Managing Partner and COO, have served in the forces. 2017 marks our third year of partnership, and over this time we have met a number of the charity’s beneficiaries, witnessing their impact on these individuals’ lives.

The work of Walking With the Wounded is incredibly varied, encompassing housing, employment, medical care and rehabilitation. Similarly, our opportunities to support their efforts come in many forms, although our main contributions are through the charity’s two major annual fundraising events; The Cumbrian Challenge and Walking Home for Christmas. If you’d like to find out more about Walking With The Wounded and their work, you can visit their website.

Walking Home for Christmas

Every year, in mid-December, the Shard Capital team forgo cars, buses, trains and bikes to Walk Home for Christmas. This event is focused on raising much needed awareness for the charity’s Home Straight programme, working with unemployed veterans to secure positive employment outcomes. Find out more here.

The Cumbrian Challenge

This is Walking With the Wounded’s fun (and difficult!), flagship fundraising event, based in the Lake District. Every team of four taking part supports at least one wounded veteran back into long-term employment.

Our 2016 efforts raised nearly £13,000, and the weekend was a great opportunity for participants to meet other Walking With the Wounded supporters and beneficiaries…as well as enjoying the musical stylings of an entertaining ABBA tribute act. Our full round-up from the weekend can be found here.
